A beautiful salar! Many kinds of breeds of birds here and you'll probably get lucky to see flamingos as well. There's also a big lake area. Enjoy the long walks around the salar here. A must visit! Salar de Atacama is a salt flat in the Atacama desert.
You can walk through the salt flats and formations. There is a lake and its a great place to take pictures. Dry salt desert, but it did have a lake with some wildlife: flamingos, avocets, and a red-winged blackbird. Drove ourselves here from San Pedro. Lovely drive here. Despite the popularity of the site, it remains peaceful, with lots of opportunities to birdwatch. The visitor centre is quite good considering its remoteness, with a barn that tells you much about the geology and ecology This landscape of crusty gray salt is so very different and just amazing!
We went to the section with the flamingo preserve and the lagoon before sunset and it was well worth it. There are paths through the flat, looking liked crusty grayish snow, but Fantastic place in the middle of nowhere, but full of live. Scenes are unique! Flamingos, salt, sun, volcanoes Is all there in just on place. These are the vast salt flats of Chile located south of San Pedro de Atacama along the Andes mountain range. There are several volcanoes dominating the landscape, and part of the attraction lies in the rock-like sharp edges of the salt platform, and the stark, Beautiful place.
Incredibly to see the sunset. The colours of the mountains changes as the sun goes down. You have to pay attention to the oposite side of the sun because the reflexion of it is magical. Totally recomend. Visit before sundown. In January see the flamingos. Have a tea picnic as you watch the sunset, but be sure to look at the mountains on the opposite side.
Wear sneakers, shorts, a light jacket, sunglasses, a hat and sunblock. Awesome spot, incredibly quiet. Apart from the busloads of Tourists all wearing either just-bought-at-the-airport outfits, or high-fashion. Both vaguely inappropriate. Mind you. My stupid wide and effective hat, heavy biking boots and full cover dusty clothing was appropriate for the climate, but won't find me Profile JOIN.
